Our Economy and Environment in the Era of COVID19

Home Energy Retrofits:

All infrastructure in Canada accounts for 17 percent of the overall greenhouse gas emissions. Fortunately, the government of Ontario prioritizes environmental ethics, while concurrently supporting affordability. In 2018, 436,000 jobs were in the energy efficiency sector alone. One thing is clear – it is essential that we must begin to adapt to the ambiguous future that comes with living through the climate crisis.

So, How Can Homeowners Contribute to a Clean Economy?

Starting December 1st 2020, the government plans to provide homeowners with $2.6 billion dollars, and up to 700,000 grants over the next 7 years. Each grant will be estimated at approximately $5000 dollars each to facilitate the transition to energy-efficient homes. As a result, there is an incentive with free EnerGuide energy assessments and more auditors will be hired and trained.

It is fundamental that homeowners and landlords be able to have access to and provide affordable and convenient financing for future home energy retrofits. In order to meet this demand, the government plans to implement a low-cost, easily accessible loan program which is founded upon energy audits and grants.

Why Fund a Green Economy?

It is fundamental that we begin by building a foundation which is rooted in ethical and moral responsibility, as well as economic development. This will allow for future opportunities not only for the immediate future, but also for the generations which are yet to arrive.

When we invest in a green, clean and healthy economy, we are not only investing for our environment, but also our health. Currently, air pollution costs our local economies billions of dollars every year. This loss of money is also a result of time off that many workers must take due to the illness that they develop, or is also due to time off as a result of a loved one being ill from pollution related illnesses. Pollution affects children, adults, the elderly and all genders regardless of age.
