Climate Crisis – Renewable Solutions for Our Collective Future

There is an immediate and urgent climate crisis, and according to the IPCC’s sixth assessment report in 2019, atmospheric C02 concentrations were higher than they have been in about two million years. The evidence is conclusive – there are disasters and environmental tragedies happening worldwide and they are anthropocentric (human-induced) in nature.

Furthermore, according to scientists and policy makers everywhere – there are temperature ranges which we must stay at or below to ensure that we can avert what U.N. Secretary-General António Guterres referred to as a “code red for humanity.” Canada must maintain its transition towards a low-carbon future. A low carbon future for Canada would include solar, wind, biofuels among other necessary renewable alternatives which would lower national C02 emissions. With the proper education, science, and policies – Canada could become a leader in renewable energy and can guide countries around the world on an environmentally conscious trajectory. Solar energy will be a crucial energy alternative in renewable and clean economic transitions everywhere.

The future of our planet and the countless generations are in our hands. Moreover, Canada must and should embrace low-carbon economically prosperous future that is rooted in ethics, environmental consciousness, and social policy. It is essential that our country, and countries around the world shift their mode in thinking to adopt equitable, abundant, and ecologically integral policies and practices that can aid the public and private sectors. With the quintessential policies in place Canada could become a global leader in climate justice and action.

There are misconceptions that suggest that an economic transition which adapts ecologically rooted values would cause many jobs to be lost – especially coupled with the resurgence of technological and artificial intelligence. The truth is an environmentally economic transition would leader to countless more jobs – jobs and careers which are healthy for our families, our communities, and our countries. A just transition is possible – and instead of building infrastructure and using traditional and conventional energy, we would be building up a clean and prosperous future. Millions of jobs could be created in Canada alone.

Canada is in a great position to adopt this ecologically economically abundant transition:

1. Canada is continuing to invest in and advance their electric mobility sector – in 2016, 62.5 million was provided to build infrastructure for alternative clean transportation including charging stations, electric vehicles as well as hydrogen refueling stations

2. On May 27th, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and Minister Seamus O’Regan worked together to release an energy efficient federal home retrofit program in Ottawa called the Canada Greener Homes Grants program. The intention of this grant is to assist homeowners with energy retrofitting their homes – through upgrades such as heaters, solar panels, windows, doors, as well as creating jobs for energy advisors, to grow our green energy sector and ultimately, to combat and mitigate the climate emergency.

3. In 2016, 3.4 billion of Canada’s budget will be reallocated towards exponentially expanding and improving public transportation systems across the country. An additional budget of 25.3 billion will be invested towards new public transportation networks.

4. Canada has now committed to an electrical vehicle mandate by 2035. In 2021, the Government of Canada announced a 5 million FedDev Ontario investment in the Automotive Parts Manufacturers’ Association to support a project titled “Project Arrow” which aims to create the automotive industry’s first locally Canadian made, renewable electric concept vehicle. Moreover, by 2025 Canada is expected to consume as much as 50% less fuel through a resurgence of new cars.

5. Canada continues to have strong air emission standards for brand new cars and trucks, and emissions will continue to reduce through Canada’s Clean Fuel Standard.
